Teacher Competences for Teaching English as a Foreign Language in the First Educational Cycle of Primary Education

<p style="text-align:justify">Foreign language teaching in the Slovenian educational context begins first grade (age 6). Many studies report a lack of qualified teachers at this stage learning around world and numerous authors emphasise misconception that basic linguistic didactic knowledge is sufficient for children. All three public universities are aware problem offer pre-service in-service programmes (student) who want to specialise English young learners. In present article, we focus on subject-specific teacher competences years primary education; namely, linguistic, subject intercultural competences. We explore teachers’ self-assessment these their perception certain elements pertaining them. The study seeks answer following research questions: (1) What do consider essential cycle education? (2) To what extent believe they have developed competences? (3) attitudes toward needs results quantitative survey, which 100 participated, show perceive competence be most least developed.
